First Aid

Emergency First Aid

The standard first aid course to meet the Approved Code of Practice requirement for “appointed persons” in a low risk environment.

Dates:  13/10, 8/12

Times:  9.30am – 1.30pm

Fee:  £40

Extended Emergency First Aid

Meets the Approved Code of Practice requirement for “appointed persons” and extends the ACOP syllabus to make it particularly applicable for staff working with adults in health and social care settings.

  Dates: 29/09, 20/11

Times:  9.30am – 4.30pm

Fee:  £50

Childcarers Emergency First Aid

An extended emergency first aid course for staff and volunteers working with children and/or babies. Includes child related conditions not covered by the standard four hour emergency first aid course. Course includes specific reference to Epipen administration as has been requested by service providers.

  Dates:  17/10, 9/12

Times:  9.30am – 4.30pm

Fee:  £50

Epipen Administration

For staff requiring a more specific training in Epipen administration and related topics than is offered in the 6.5 hour emergency first aid course.

  Dates:  26/09

Times:  9.30am – 12.30pm

Fee:  £37.50

AED Defibrillation Training

This 3 hour course enables participants to reach the required standard of AED practice to facilitate the saving of lives following acute myocardial infarction. For trained first aiders only.

First Aid at Work

For staff responsible for administering first aid in medium to high risk workplaces. Gives the required "suitable person" qualification.     

Four Day Course

Food Hygiene

Elementary Food Hygiene

The standard Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland (REHIS) course for staff and volunteers handling food in the workplace and will satisfy most inspection requirements. This course is a requirement for staff and volunteers who handle “open food” in the workplace, i.e. if they are involved in any of the following activities: storage, preparation and cooking of “high risk” food (meat, diary products, eggs, fish, cooked rice).

  Dates:  11/09, 30/10

Times:  9.30am – 5.00pm

Introduction to Food Hygiene

Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland course for staff and volunteers who serve food (including feeding) and/or set out and clear away meals and snacks and/or reheat prepared lunches, but have no involvement at all in the storage, preparation and cooking of “high risk” food (meat, diary products, eggs, fish, cooked rice) and work under a qualified supervisor.

  Dates: 24/10, 28/11

Times:  9.30am – 12.00pm

Fee:  £33.50

Introduction to HACCP and Hazard Analysis

All organisations which handle food are required to implement, maintain and review a food safety assurance system based on procedures involving the seven Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) system. It will enable you to implement appropriate and acceptable procedures at work. The course is recommended for members of the HACCP team and staff who handle “high risk” food. Course participants must hold a current (within the preceding 5 years) Elementary Food Hygiene certificate recognised by REHIS.

Moving and Handling

Moving and Handling

Particularly suitable for working with adults across a broad spectrum of requirements including clients who have little or no mobility.

  Dates:  04/09, 31/10

Moving and Handling Awareness

This course is designed for staff and volunteers working with any of the following: babies, young children and semi-dependent adults.

  Dates:  19/09, 21/11

Ergonomics and Moving and Handling

Essential information and skills for administrative, clerical and managerial staff to meet legal requirements.

Health and Safety

Health and Safety Awareness

The course provides an introduction and overview of current legislation and policies; it covers safety policies, risk assessment, incident reporting, fire safety and employer and employee obligations under the legislation.

Health and Safety Awareness and Risk Assessment

This course combines our health & safety awareness course with a more substantial risk assessment element. It is suitable for staff above basic grade requiring familiarisation in health and safety and risk assessment practice in the workplace.

Health and Safety Management

For staff with Health & Safety responsibilities including safety representatives. This course covers the main provisions of current legislation and policies, health and safety management, incident reporting, risk assessment, staff consultation, corporate insurance and managing a safety inspection as well as other topical items.

More Social Care

Epilepsy Awareness

The course can be geared towards working with either children or adults or both. It provides an introduction to understanding epilepsy, the impact of epilepsy on clients’ lifestyle and the principles of managing seizures.

Epilepsy Awareness and Diazepam Rectal Tube Administration

For staff working with clients who are prescribed rectal tube diazepam. It provides an introduction to understanding epilepsy, the impact of epilepsy on clients’ lifestyle and the principles and practice of managing seizures using Diazepam. Includes also a discussion on use of care plans and risk assessment as well as containing a practical element for procedures for rectal tube insertion on a model.

Current Trends in Epilepsy

Designed for experienced, qualified nursing staff and professionals allied to medicine.  It is particularly appropriate for senior carers with responsibility for supporting staff working with clients with epilepsy.

Good Practice in Infection Control

For all staff and volunteers who require introductory or refresher training in infection control; it covers what is infection, common causes of infection and how it spreads, preventative measures and breaking the cycle of infection (hygiene and clean environments)

Administration and Storage of Medication

This course is suitable for carers in a variety of settings (hospitals, care homes, community and domestic) who are responsible for preparing, administering and storing medication, and monitoring and recording its effects.

Loss and Bereavement

Understanding and skills development for carers working in circumstances of loss and bereavement: supporting relatives, friends, colleagues and self.  Please note: this is a 2-day course.

Promoting Positive Behaviour

This course is designed for child care workers in nurseries, after school clubs and similar settings. It will enable staff to work in partnership with parents and colleagues in formulating positive guidelines when dealing with challenging behaviour.

Late bookings If places remain available, late bookings will be accepted with pre-payment on the day of the course.

Cancellations We will refund you if we cancel a course or you cancel bookings not later than 11 working days prior to the course start date.

 

Times given in the programme are inclusive of all breaks (lunch is not provided).

Courses involving practical exercises may finish earlier than scheduled if participant numbers are low (but the syllabus will have been fully covered!).

 

Venue Courses will be held at St James Church Seminar Room, 57b Inverleith Row, Edinburgh unless otherwise stated in joining instructions
